Learn more about Prof. Nuno Sousa

Nuno Sousa is Full Professor and Rector at the University Max-Planck, SP, Brazil and University of Jaguariúna, SP, Brazil. He is Visiting Professor at Upstate Medical University, NY.

He is a Neuro-radiologist. He is of the Medical Digital Center P5 at University of Minho.

He is the President of the Portuguese Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation (AICIB).

After moved from U. Porto to U. Minho in 2001, he was able to create from scratch, together with a small group of other leaders, this recognized medical school, one of the most well-known and respected internationally. He serves at several medical education/assessment advisory boards (namely at the National Board of Medical Examiners, and at the European Board of Medical Assessors). Currently, Nuno Sousa is leading a vibrant academic ecossystem in the Metropolitan Region of campinas, Saõ Paulo, Brazil.

Nuno Sousa was the President of the School of Medicine at University of Minho (2017-2022), the Director of the Clinical Academic Center at Hospital de Braga (2013-2024) and the President of the Portuguese Society for Neurosciences (2011-2015).

He was the President of the Scientific Council of Life and Health Sciences of FCT (Portuguese Science Foundation) (2015-2017) and the President of the Portuguese Society of Anatomy (2016-2018).

He is a member of Bial Foundation.

His research main interests are focused in the establishment of functional and structural correlations mediated by stress and its implications in neuropsychiatric disorders. Detailed assessment of neuroplastic events, incorporation of newly generated cells into neuronal networks, rearrangements of established dendritic and synaptic contacts, combined with behavioural, neurochemical and eletrophysiogical, optogenetic and molecular biology and (epi)genetics correlates have been established in his laboratory; the work from the lab covers from basic to clinical research and several modulatory interventions (including digital) have also been described in order to promote recovery of structure and function in neuronal tissues. He has been one of the first to describe the brain connectome (structural and functional) in the dynamic response to stress.

During his career, Nuno Sousa has published more than 500 peer-reviewed research articles in several journals, including Science (where he described for the first time the impact of stress on decision-making), and is one of the most cited researchers in the field of Neuroscience (H-factor 108; >50000 citations).

Nuno Sousa has received Gold Medal of the Minister of Health.

Nuno Sousa coordinates several national and international scientific projects, including work-packages in some European initiatives in the field of neuroscience.

In addition to academic merits, Nuno Sousa serves on several science policy and advisory board positions, and as an Ad hoc reviewer for various neuroscience journal and international funding organizations. He is Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience and Member of Editorial Board of Neurobiology of Stress and Aging Brain.

The post Palestra “Novel neurobiological concepts of stress”, com Nuno Sousa first appeared on CEB Unicamp.
